North Dakota University System is governed by the State Board of Higher Education. The State Board of Education is responsible for approving new or discontinued programs, reviewing the quality of institutions and programs, setting Board budget guidelines, and facilitating equipment or facility costs. The Board also provides grant opportunities, including a $5 million funding opportunity from the John Templeton Foundation, Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) Program Solicitation, and Pay for Success Pilot Grants. The North Dakota University System includes two research universities ó North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota, four regional universities ó Dickinson State University, Mayville State University, Minot State University, and Valley City State University, and five community colleges ó Bismarck State College, Dakota College at Bottineau, Lake Region State College, North Dakota State College of Science, and Williston State College.

The University of North Dakota was founded in 1883 as a public institution. The University of North Dakota offers online bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, nursing, psychology, social science and general studies. Master’s degrees are available in economics, aviation, business administration, forensic psychology, nursing, public administration, and social work. UND also offers online doctoral degrees in educational leadership and nursing.
Dickinson State University was founded in 1919. U.S. News & World Report ranks Dickinson State No. 63 in Regional Colleges (Midwest) in the 2012 edition of Best Colleges, and No. 4 in Top Public Schools in Regional Colleges (Midwest). Dickinson State University offers online bachelor’s degree programs in agriculture sales, business administration, finance, human resource management, international business, technology, and university studies. Online classes are provided through the Moodle learning management system. Dickinson State University offers an online orientation course for all incoming online students.
