Chances are you've seen pink ribbons on trees, pink packaging on food, and even professional athletes sporting pink gear this month. That's because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual initiative to raise awareness about early breast cancer detection. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women in the United States are at risk for developing invasive breast cancer at some point in their lifetime, and the chance of dying from the disease is roughly 1 in 35. Thanks to the advances in medicine and early detection, there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States today. Many of those survivors have turned to blogging as a means to journal their personal experiences, share advice with patients and other survivors, as well as spread awareness and inform the public about the disease that has taken too many lives.
